The shown cover was sold at ebay for a relatively high amount of money. I am definitely not the authority to judge such covers but feel the Tibetan stamps, especially the bisect, was not necessary and eventually later on added. Other opinions welcomed.

The cover is from 1954. The first Chinese P.O. in Tibet opened
in Lhasa that year. The cover is addressed to Shigatse. The cover went by Chinese mail to Lhasa. Could it be that the Chinese PO in Shigatse (opened 1956?) still was unopened and the tibetan postage was for the Lhasa-Shigatse trip? This was perhaps the good news. The bad news is the fact that the rate is 4 tranka, a rate for registration, but no mark on the cover indikate that it should be a registered cover. The stamp arrangement of bisecting a 2tr at the same time both1 tr and 2 tr stamps apparently are avalable is peculiar. Such bisects smells "nepalese" and I think the cover is addressed to a Nepali gentleman in Shigatse. So, like you say Rainer, it is not easy to judge this item. Stamps and postmark of course can have been added later, but after 50 years of collecting Tibet my judgement is: Correct as combination cover, but philatelic. ------------- Rulle Hatt rullar Hatt |

The postmark on the front cancelling the Chinese stamp, is
very unclear, but is it a Lhasa postmark (same as on the back???). If so this item really is VERY PHILATELIC! The sender on the back is a person in Lhasa, but when I judged the cover I thought it could be the "forwarding agent". ANYHOW: P H I L A T E L I C. ------------- Rulle Hatt rullar Hatt |
