Has someone seen this or a similar manipulated cover before?

It was prepared probably around 1950. The Gyantse postmark is genuine, at least as can be seen out of the image, however, instead of an early orange 1/2 tr. the cover is franked with a 1950´s 2 tr. orange stamp. It also lacks additional Tibetan script for the forwarding to Lhasa.

In my opinion (and i am not alone with that opinion) at least the Shigatse and Lhasa postmarks came in private hands after 1956. The Lhasa postmark was used to apply genuine postmarks to the 1 sang forgeries. Shigatse postmark was also for various faked covers and combination covers with red Chinese stamps.

Has some member have other clues of Tibetan postmarks that came in private hands?

On a dealer web site i found a similar cover, described as follows:

TIBET: Sometimes it is “wrong” when everything is “right”. GENUINE December 1933 cover from Nepal to “Digarcha” (Shigatse) via Gyantse. (“KATHMANDU” Oval & GYANTSE Type B-3 transit are Genuine.) A GENUINE 4tr Green added and tied with GENUINE GYANTSE Type VIII (Hel. T41) cancel. Everything is GENUINE except this particular printing of the 4tr Green (Setting II, Pos. 10) was not printed until the early 1950s. Either the cover was delayed for 20 years in Gyantse or more likely the Tibetan stamp was added later to make it into a combination cover. This enhancement had to have been done in Tibet as a Geuine GYANTSE cancel ties the stamp. (In the original usage the cover was in all likelihood privately carried from Gyantse to Shigatse – a not uncommon practice at the time. A very nice example of an “Improved Cover”.
